Trindiscorish (For Our Sammy)

by Thomas M. Pender

This was written earlier this year for a daughter who was expected to be born this month.  Sadly, she did not arrive, but we love her just the same.  Some words need a bit of explanation: the title "Trindiscorish" is a word I invented to describe our daughter's lineage.  Her mother is Trini with some Indian, and I am Scot-Irish.  Crammed together, it becomes "Trindiscorish."  The term "steups" is a Trini word for a dismissive sound made with the lips.  Sammy's "too-young aunt" is my little sister Kristi, who passed in 2003.

The light of our world
Has yet to shine
For all to see

Just for now
She is a tiny star
A wish come true
Lighting the lives
Of We who created
She
Until all are allowed
To witness her glow

I see her in my heart’s eye now
With her mommy’s beauty
And her daddy’s wonder
Her grandfathers’ blessings
And her too-young aunt’s secrets

I see her steups like mommy
And run to daddy
Safe and sound
In the warmth and joy of our love
She will be a first in many ways
To all who are blessed by her
A Trindiscorish gift
Directly from God above
To illustrate the perfection
Of our love’s natural combination

Our hearts have already expanded
To love her
And we long to count the tiny fingers
Around which she will wrap us
We celebrate our love
And our love’s creation
Even as we await the moment
When we
Become three
